Castaway is the room most Portland, Oregon couples picture when they say they want something that does not look like a hotel. It is also, from a production standpoint, three separate problems stacked on top of each other: an enormous volume of air, a wall of glass that only works for part of the day, and hard surfaces in every direction.
None of that is a reason to avoid it. It is a reason to arrive with a plan. Below is how we would brief ourselves for a wedding in a room like this, written from the building rather than from a shoot.
Bow-truss ceilings put twenty-odd feet of air above every head in the room, and that air has to be dealt with twice. Visually it means the room reads dark above the guests unless something is lit up into the trusses, so a reception frame either includes the ceiling on purpose or crops it out on purpose. There is no accidental middle.
The venue states a capacity of up to 400. At the top of that number the practical issue is distance. A long lens from the back of a room that size compresses beautifully and hears nothing, so anything that matters has to be miked at the source rather than covered from the perimeter. We would plan camera positions inside the guest footprint rather than behind it.
A west-facing glass wall is the best light in the building and the shortest-lived. Through the middle of the day it fills the room with soft, directional light that needs nothing added. Then the sun drops low enough to come straight through the glass, and for twenty or thirty minutes the room is spectacular and completely unshootable in the wrong direction.
After that it collapses. Not gradually. A west wall goes from the best light of the day to nothing usable in well under an hour, and in Portland the clock for that moves four and a half hours between June and December. On a late June date, sunset sits at 9:04 PM. On a December date it is 4:28 PM, which means an afternoon ceremony in that room is a night shoot from the recessional onward.
Our default is to put the couple against the glass while it is still working and to be finished before the sun is actually in it, not during.
Concrete, brick, glass and a barrel of open air overhead is the classic recipe for a speech that turns to mush. The sound leaves the speaker, hits four hard surfaces and arrives at any distant microphone as a smeared version of itself. No amount of post-production repairs it, because there is nothing wrong with the recording. The room did that.
So toasts come off a direct feed from the house system wherever one exists, with a close capture as backup and a room track for atmosphere only. Ceremony vows run on transmitters at the source. If the ceremony is also in the main volume, we would push for the ceremony position to sit as far from the largest reflective span as the layout allows.
This is also the argument for handling the music in-house. When the same team runs the board and the cameras, the toast feed is arranged in advance instead of negotiated during cocktail hour. See one team, one night.
Once the daylight is gone, a room like this typically runs on a mix of whatever is installed and whatever is brought in: warm tungsten practicals, cooler LED washes, string lights at a third temperature and uplighting in a color somebody chose for the tablecloths. On a still frame you can white balance to one of them. On a moving camera crossing the room, the skin tone shifts as you walk.
The fix is boring and effective. We match our own sources to the dominant practical, ask that any colored uplighting be aimed at walls rather than at faces, and grade to the warm end rather than fighting it. What you should not do is let a video team flood the room with white light to make their job easier. The room stops looking like the evening you paid for.
In an industrial room with a good window wall, the trap is scheduling portraits by the clock instead of by the glass. Couples see a 8:14 PM August sunset, plan portraits for 7:45 PM, and lose the window light hours earlier because a low sun on a west wall is not the same thing as sunset.
The other break is load-in. A room this size takes real time to set, and if the ceremony flip happens in the same volume as the reception, there is a window where the space belongs to the crew and not to the guests. We would want that window on paper, agreed with the planner, so nobody is dragging a case behind a first look.
A large indoor room is the easiest contingency in the region, which is exactly why it fills up for October and November dates. November averages 5.45 inches of rain and measurable precipitation on 60.9 percent of days, so an outdoor plan in that part of the calendar is a coin toss and an indoor one is not.
What still needs planning is the exterior. Portraits, the exit and any establishing frames happen outside the building, and in the wet half of the year that means a covered position scouted in advance rather than found in the rain.

We build the block backward from when the glass stops working, not from the published sunset.
