Hillsboro Silicon Forest

Hillsboro video production and wedding videographer

The most technically demanding corporate environment in the metro, a working farm belt on its northern edge, and an airport that decides whether a drone flies at all.

Hillsboro is two places on one map. There is the Silicon Forest: Intel, Lam Research and the semiconductor and equipment corridor that runs across Washington County, which produces the most access controlled and most rewarding corporate filming in the region. And there is everything north and west of it, which is farmland, creek bottom and golf, and which is where the weddings happen.

These are planning notes about specific Hillsboro places and constraints. Nothing here claims a shoot at any of them.

Places worth knowing about

Intel

The largest private employer in the state, spread across several Hillsboro campuses including Ronler Acres, Jones Farm and Hawthorn Farm. Filming here is a security and process exercise before it is a creative one: badge access, escorts who do not leave your side, restricted areas that cannot be photographed at all, clean room protocol where applicable and an NDA that usually precedes even a scout. None of that is a problem. It is a lead time, and it belongs in the schedule from the first conversation.

Lam Research

Semiconductor equipment, in the same corridor and under substantially the same access rules. The filmable subject matter in these buildings is exceptional, because process and manufacturing is the most visually interesting thing a company can show, and it is also the most tightly governed. Expect a shot list agreed in advance and reviewed afterwards.

Meriwether National Golf Club

Twenty seven holes on the flat ground south east of town, and a natural home for corporate outings and charity scrambles given how much of the metro’s corporate workforce is within fifteen minutes of it. Open parkland photographs well at both ends of the day, and a shotgun start with the whole field visible at once is one of the few genuinely spectacular aerial frames in golf. See tournament coverage.

McKay Creek and the north farm belt

The creek runs down through Hillsboro toward the Tualatin, and the ground north of town is working agricultural land: nursery stock, grass seed, hazelnut orchards and open sky. This is the best evening light in the city, because nothing blocks the western horizon. It is also private property, so a ceremony in a field is a conversation with a landowner rather than a location scout decision.

Hillsboro Airport

One of the busiest airports in the state and a towered field, which means the airspace over central Hillsboro is controlled. Any commercial drone flight there requires an airspace authorisation, which for most sites comes through LAANC and returns quickly, but only if somebody asked. A crew that arrives expecting to put an aircraft up over a Hillsboro venue without checking the chart is a crew that does not put an aircraft up.

Orenco Station and downtown

Orenco gives you brick, plazas and a walkable transit oriented centre that reads as urban without being downtown Portland. The historic core around Main Street, the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex where the Hillsboro Hops play, and the Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals round out a set of locations that do not look like anywhere else in the metro.

Light, sound and the drive

How the light behaves here

Hillsboro sits on the open floor of the Tualatin Valley with the coast range well to the west, which gives it the longest clean evening light in the metro. Nothing meaningful blocks the horizon on the north and west sides of town, so published sunset times are close to what you actually get, which is not true in Portland proper or in the wooded suburbs.

The corporate side is the opposite problem. Semiconductor and equipment buildings are largely windowless by design, which means everything indoors is a fully lit set with no daylight to blend, and colour temperature control matters more here than in almost any other environment in the region.

The audio risk

Two local sources. Aircraft, because a busy towered airport generates a steady pattern of circuits overhead and an outdoor ceremony under that pattern will lose at least one sentence. Farm equipment, seasonally, which is loud, unpredictable and entirely outside anyone’s control. Both argue for the same answer: independent audio sources on the officiant and a partner, a backup capture running at the ceremony position, and a plan that does not depend on any single microphone surviving the day.

Getting there

About thirty minutes west of central Portland on US-26, roughly twenty miles. The MAX Blue Line runs the whole way and terminates in the centre of town, which matters more for guest logistics than for a crew with cases.

Corporate and commercial work in Hillsboro

Computers and electronics employ about 41,400 people across the metro and software another 35,264, and Hillsboro is where much of that concentrates. The work is executive interviews, technical explainers, recruitment video for hard to fill engineering roles, and process filming inside facilities that require escorts. It is the most procedurally demanding corporate environment in the region and the most interesting to shoot. See corporate video production and recruitment video.

Wedding coverage across Hillsboro runs the same way it does anywhere else in the region: film first, photography built to sit beside it, and ceremony audio treated as the most important thing recorded all day. See wedding films and photography, and the venue production guides for room by room planning. If the evening also needs music, film, photo and DJ from one studio explains how the crew is allocated when all three are booked.

Hillsboro questions

Can you fly a drone in Hillsboro?

With an FAA Part 107 certificate and an airspace authorisation, yes. Hillsboro Airport is a towered field and the airspace above much of the city is controlled, so authorisation is required rather than optional. For most sites it comes through LAANC and returns in minutes.

The point is that it has to be checked in advance. It is not a decision that can be made on the morning of a shoot.

What is different about filming at a semiconductor facility?

Access, not cameras. Badge processes, escorts, areas that cannot be photographed at all, protocol for controlled environments and an NDA that often precedes a scout. The shot list is agreed in advance and reviewed afterwards.

Build that lead time into the schedule from the beginning and the day itself runs smoothly. Discover it two weeks out and the date moves.

How far is Hillsboro from Portland, Oregon?

About thirty minutes west on US-26, roughly twenty miles, outside peak hours. Westbound traffic on a Friday afternoon is the reliable exception.

The MAX Blue Line terminates in Hillsboro, which is useful for guests and largely irrelevant for a crew carrying lighting and audio cases.

Is Hillsboro good for outdoor weddings?

The light is, genuinely. The valley floor here has the most open western horizon in the metro, so evening light lasts closer to the published sunset time than it does in the wooded suburbs.

The constraints are aircraft noise near the airport pattern and the fact that most of the beautiful open ground north of town is working farmland in private hands.

Have you worked at Intel or Lam Research?

No, and this page makes no such claim. Golden Hour Productions is a new studio in Portland, Oregon. What is described here is how facilities of that type are accessed and filmed, which is planning knowledge a client needs before a shoot is scheduled.

Security and media policies at any large employer change, so confirm the current process with the company.
